I don't know what happens when I add words to my sketches, but I'm about to find out! I like your style! (You made utility poles into works of art in your sketchbook...that's a whole new level right there!)
What a great idea! Somehow, adding notes seems to take the sketch out of the intimidating realm of “art” and puts it into a working process. It also adds depth, especially the stories. Thank you
Thank you for these distinct ways of bringing text and image creatively together. Nature field journaling relies on some of these; but Im especially inspired by your last example of weaving in an imaginary mini-story.
When I look back through old sketchbooks, the drawings I enjoy most are one with notes. I need to remember this and make the effort to write things down more often.
Wonderful! Can I ask a process question? In the first sketch did you draw the boys and then write around them creating the illusion that the words continue behind them? Did you rules faint lines, or write faint text to keep the letters so consistent?
bein self taught .. am still challenged by ‘layers & masks’ etc.. so my ‘image mapping’ and/or ‘storyboarding is very clumsy - but i ain’t creating ‘Art’ - am sketching simple Notes for various Cinematic Departments .. camera & talent etc 🦎🏴☠️🎬
.. lovin on yer Post .. feastin ! but here’s that link what inspired me .. & the his Term - PhotoMapping .. worked Max Security Juvenile - Special Agent - could run with the wolves .. till they wuz plumb tuckered & my ol hound barely warmed up .. & am a huge fan of Prison Farms & Gardens for damn good reasons .. 🦎🏴☠️💋
Been doing this for 1/2 century .. though been calling it ‘picture mapping’ lately & of course ‘storyboarding. We did this for cinematic reasons re The 108 Monitor VidiWall / Expo 86 / Canadian Pavilion / Vancouver British Columbia. (got zero skills myself re even basic ‘drawing - but freelance ‘Shooter. Stills & Motion Picture & TimeLapse & Director/Editor
We took Mitsubishi Thermal Prints of 3/4” video work tape with ‘Burned In Time Code - waxed the back. The Master Tapes were primarily 1” or 2” or Betacam SP - many or most Film - from 16mm to 35mm
Thus we stuck the polaroid size mitsubishis on studio walls / often photocopying them & waxing, & writing Edit Notes / Source Masters, building Notes from our Design Team for our Offline Video Editors. Some of this stuff / tactics came from Corporate Slide Show Producers - but I came more via NFB - National Film Board & had seen Animators ‘sketching storyboards. Building Soundtracks requires ‘Referencing to Picture’ & also to help Guide ‘Foley for Sound Effects.. PS - won’t ever utilize AI for StoryBoarding or Camera/Talent Notes & Direction - the ‘rough visualizations i create currently come from ACTUAL SETTINGS I’ve Seen or Shot myself & I’m leaving Plenty of Room for TALENT & CAMERA & Dialogue Writer to Pour some of their Imagination into my Story Outlines..
Damn but don’t i wish i had your talent .. ! Going to Feast on your post again .. & hey ! Have a link i can find re The Sun Quentin Project - where Inmates were given Photos to Write On - double sided photos .. that Really inspired some of my adventures creating Montage Style Hyper Imagery ! 🦎🏴☠️🎬

This is a beautiful show of how two mediums can intersect and produce something far more wonderful

Great annotation ideas, thank you James!

This inspires me to make spontaneous use of my Field Notes booklets instead of waiting for the “perfect” application.
