I thought of Wyeth before I saw your mention of his tempera technique, but I was thinking of his way of slowly building up watercolor which he called drybrush. It's interesting, he's the only painter I know of that lists drybrush as a distinct medium rather than a technique.

And so, Ruskin died before Pointillism, right? Or they overlapped a bit. Isn't this what the Pointillists were aiming at, in a way. They were using more vibrant color, and a different pattern - bigger strokes of color. But somehow, he probably woudn't have admired Pointillists.
